Backward Mapping the IB Curriculum:
Middle Years and Diploma Programme Science

Overview

Working with a collaborator at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, I co-designed a complete backward mapping system to help IB educators bridge the gap between the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. The framework analyzed every DP Biology assessment component, identified the specific skills each required, and mapped those skills developmentally across grades 9–12.

What began as a single-subject framework for science educators became the foundation for a replicable, scalable model that the IB organization-trained practitioners to use across five subject areas — the highest form of adoption a curriculum design can achieve.

Key Outcomes

  • Analyzed DP external papers, internal assessments, and Group 4 Project to identify terminal skill requirements

  • Designed layered resource system: DP Skills Analysis, 9–12 Skills Map, MYP alignment maps, sample unit planners

  • Framework expanded to five subject areas (Biology, Chemistry, Humanities, World Language, English) and informed official IB workshop model

  • Federally funded; distributed through international IB educator network
