Overview

The 5 Cs of MYP Unit Planning — Content, Concept, Context, Convert, Create — is a unit design framework I co-developed with a colleague using the IB Middle Years Programme as a base. It gives teachers a concrete, repeatable process for moving from content to concept to guiding question to assessment, and while it was built in an IB context, the underlying methodology transfers to any K–12 classroom. After years of delivering this framework live at regional conferences and in school-specific sessions, I translated it into a 7-lesson Articulate Rise module — preserving the scenario-based practice and collaborative inquiry that made the live version effective, in a format that scales beyond any single delivery context.

Key Outcomes

• Designed and built a complete 7-lesson Articulate Rise module translating a live facilitation framework into self-paced eLearning

• Module includes scenario-based practice across 7 subject areas (Language A, Humanities, Science, Math, PE, Arts, Technology), knowledge checks assessing conceptual understanding, and reflection prompts anchoring learning to teachers’ own units

• Framework addresses IB’s current Global Contexts model throughout — equipping new teachers with language and concepts they will encounter in formal IB evaluation processes

• IB assessment rubrics for Significant Concepts and guiding questions embedded as calibration tools, giving teachers concrete standards to design toward

• Module functions both as standalone self-paced learning and as pre-work for live follow-up coaching or workshop sessions
